PDLC, PNLC, CLC, or EC: Which Privacy Glass Technology is Right for You?

Privacy glass technology is revolutionizing modern interiors by providing dynamic privacy, energy efficiency, and sleek design. However, with multiple types of smart glass available such as PDLC, PNLC, CLC, and EC, it’s crucial to understand the technical differences to select the right solution for your project.

Understanding the Types of Privacy Glass Technology

PDLC (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal)

PriWatt Glass is a switchable smart glass that uses PDLC (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal) technology. It allows you to instantly change the glass from clear (transparent) to frosted (opaque) when you apply an electrical current.

  • When power is ON, the liquid crystal molecules align — letting light pass through (making the glass clear).
  • When power is OFF, the molecules scatter light — creating privacy (making the glass frosted).

Key Technical Details:

  • Instant switching (milliseconds)
  • 77–83% visible light transmission when clear
  • High UV blocking (>98%)
  • Low-voltage operation
  • Lifespan: >15 years, 2M+ ON/OFF cycles
  • Color options: White or light gray

PDLC glass is ideal for any application such as residential windows and doors, shower enclosures, office walls, retail shops, schools and even healthcare, offering seamless control over privacy and light with just the touch of a button.

PNLC (Polymer Network Liquid Crystal)  – Reversed PDLC

PriWatt Reverse Smart Glass uses PNLC (Polymer Network Liquid Crystal) privacy glass technology, a next-generation evolution of smart glass. Unlike standard PDLC glass, which is opaque when OFF and clear when ON, PNLC technology works in reverse:

  • Transparent when power is OFF
  • Opaque (privacy mode) when power is ON

The polymer network actively positions the liquid crystal molecules and precisely controls how they scatter light. When you apply voltage, the molecules move and scatter light to create opacity. Once you remove the voltage, the molecules realign, allowing light to pass through clearly and therefore restoring transparency.

Key Technical Details:

  • Fast switching (~0.5 seconds)
  • 88% total light transmission when clear
  • ≤ 5 W/m² power consumption (energy-efficient)
  • Operating voltage: low voltage
  • Default clear state — remains transparent during power outages

PNLC  is best suited for environments where clear visibility is the default and privacy or light control is only occasionally required. Works well in luxury residential applications, conference rooms, or retail storefronts where a premium aesthetic is important, as well as schools and healthcare facilities.

switchable glass technology 1

CLC (Cholesteric Liquid Crystal)
CLC(Colorant Liquid Crystal) privacy glass technology is an advanced light-regulating smart glass that uses colorant liquid crystal technology to control light transmission and privacy.

In the OFF state, the glass appears dark gray, offering effective light control and privacy protection. When powered ON, it becomes clear and transparent, providing excellent visibility and modern aesthetics.

Key Technical Details

  • Default State: Dark-gray (no power)
  • Activated State: Transparent (with power)
  • Visible Light Transmission: ~38% (ON) / ~6% (OFF)
  • Operating Voltage: low-voltage
  • Fast Response Time: milliseconds
  • UV Blocking: >99%
  • IR Blocking: >80%

CLC adjustable glass is best suited where controlled light transmission and privacy are important. Its dark-gray appearance when powered off provides elegant shading and visual comfort, while its transparent state enhances openness and natural light when powered on. This makes it ideal for residential windows, doors, and partitions, as well as office partitions, conference rooms, and skylights where adjustable visibility is desired. In retail, hospitality, and automotive projects, CLC technology adds a premium touch by improving thermal insulation, reducing glare, and creating a modern, high-tech aesthetic with dynamic control over transparency.

EC (Electrochromic Glass)

Electrochromic (EC) glass changes tint levels when a low voltage is applied, reducing solar heat gain and glare. It’s main goal is variable light control and energy management.

Key Technical Details:

  • Default State: Transparent (no power)
  • Operating Voltage: high-voltage
  • Response Time: <0.5 seconds
  • Lifespan: >10 years with proper use

EC glass is optimal for commercial buildings, luxury homes, or energy-conscious designs, where controlling sunlight and reducing HVAC load is critical.

Which Privacy Glass Technology Should You Choose?

From a technical perspective, your choice depends on application and priorities:

  • PDLC – Best for spaces where privacy is required most of the time and transparency is only occasionally needed.
  • PNLC – Suited for environments that require transparency most of the time, with occasional privacy, offering lower haze and higher clarity.
  • CLC – Designed for projects seeking a dark-gray aesthetic with controlled light shading and a premium look.
  • EC – Ideal for energy efficiency, solar control, and adjustable tinting levels for exterior glazing.

Switchable glass technologies not only transforms your space aesthetically but also enhances functionality, privacy, and energy efficiency. Understanding the technical specifications ensures your investment delivers long-term value.

FAQ

Reverse Smart Glass Questions

What makes Reverse Glass different?

Reverse Glass uses PNLC technology, so it is clear when power is off and turns opaque when power is on. Standard PDLC glass works in the opposite way.

Is Reverse Glass a good choice for offices?

Yes. It is ideal for meeting rooms and interior partitions where glass normally stays clear and privacy is needed only at selected times.

Does it provide privacy during a power outage?

No. Reverse Glass becomes clear when power is off. For fail-private applications, standard PDLC glass is usually the better choice.

How quickly does it switch?

The glass turns private in under 200 milliseconds and returns to clear in under 10 milliseconds.

Is it energy efficient?

Yes. It runs on 25–80 VAC low voltage and consumes less than 0.5 watts per square foot while powered — and it needs no power at all to stay clear.

Can it be used in doors and partitions?

Yes. The laminated construction makes it suitable for interior doors, office partitions, conference rooms and other architectural glazing applications.

What colors are available?

Reverse Glass is available in white only. Grey and tinted options are offered on standard PDLC glass.

Where can I find installation information?

The technical manual above includes handling, electrical and installation guidance. A qualified glazing professional should complete installation.
