Smart Glass for Data Centers

Smart Glass for Data Centers

Instant privacy for server halls, control rooms and client cages — with no fabric, no dust and nothing to maintain. One touch takes the glass from clear to private in seconds.

Privacy on demandNo dust-collecting blindsNothing to clean or replaceCertified nationwide installation

The problem with blinds

Fabric and slats do not belong in a filtered-air room

Data centers control airflow, particulate and access. Blinds, curtains and applied privacy vinyl work against all three — and they carry a maintenance cost that never ends.

01

They collect dust and fibers

Slats, cords and fabric trap particulate and shed fibers into a room whose entire design is built around clean, filtered, controlled airflow.

02

They cost money every year

Cleaning, re-cording, straightening bent slats and full replacement are recurring line items. Smart glass has no moving parts and no consumable material.

03

They look wrong on a client tour

A broken slat or a taped-up privacy film is the first thing a customer or auditor notices. Switchable glass stays a clean architectural surface at all times.

Privacy on demand

Clear for operations. Private the moment you need it.

The same partition gives your team full line of sight into the hall during normal operation, and complete visual privacy for visitors, audits, contractors and camera-restricted areas — from a switch, a remote, a schedule or your building control system.

Data center server hall fully visible through a transparent switchable glass partition
ClearFull visibility of racks, aisles and indicator lights for operations, walkthroughs and monitoring.
The same data center hall hidden behind the switchable glass partition in its frosted private state
PrivateThe hall disappears behind the glass while daylight and room light still pass through.

Switching happens in seconds, and the glass draws power only while the privacy state is being held.

Zero dust, zero maintenance

A sealed surface you simply wipe clean

  • The privacy layer is sealed inside laminated glass or bonded to the glass surface — nothing is exposed to the room air.
  • No fabric, no slats, no cords, no fibers shedding into a filtered environment.
  • No moving parts to jam, bend or break, and nothing hanging in front of an air path.
  • Cleaning is the same as cleaning any glass partition — no specialist service and no takedown.
  • No replacement cycle, so the recurring cost of blinds simply disappears from the facility budget.

Smart glass dividers at AI Engineers, Middletown CT

Switchable film was installed on two interior windows inside the technology center, so sensitive areas stay private during normal use and turn transparent instantly when the team needs visibility.

Energy and cooling

Less solar heat, less glare, easier screens

On exterior glazing and daylit control rooms, switchable glass gives the facility a second job beyond privacy.

Solar heat control

Switching exterior glazing to its private state cuts direct solar gain during peak sun, reducing the heat load the cooling system has to remove.

Glare control in the NOC

Operators keep dashboards and video walls readable through the day without pulling shades that then stay closed permanently.

Low, intermittent power

The glass runs on low-voltage power and consumes it only while the privacy state is held, not around the clock.

Common questions

Smart glass in a data center environment

Can it be added to glass we already have?

Yes. Switchable film is applied to suitable existing glass, which is how the AI Engineers data center project was completed. Complete laminated smart glass panels are used for new construction or replacement glazing.

What happens during a power failure?

The behavior depends on the technology chosen. Original PDLC is private when power is off and clear when power is on. Reverse PNLC is clear when power is off, so the glass stays clear in a power failure.

Does it release anything into the air?

No. The active layer is laminated inside the glass or bonded to the glass surface, so there is no exposed fabric or fiber in the room.

How is it controlled?

By wall switch, remote, mobile app, schedule, or integration with an existing building or access control system.

How is it cleaned?

Like any other glass partition, with standard non-abrasive glass cleaning. There is nothing to take down, launder or re-cord.

FAQ

Smart Film Reverse Questions

What makes Film Reverse different?

Film Reverse (PNLC) is clear when the power is off and turns private only while it is switched on, the opposite of Film Original (PDLC).

What happens when the power goes off?

The glass stays clear, so the space keeps its view and daylight during a power outage.

Can it be applied to glass I already have?

Yes. PriWatt™ film is a self-adhesive film applied directly to existing interior glass, windows and doors, so the glass does not have to be replaced.

How fast does it switch?

Under 200 milliseconds from clear to private and under 10 milliseconds back to clear, so the change looks instant.

Does privacy mode block the view completely?

In privacy mode haze reaches 94%, so people and shapes cannot be made out while natural light still comes through. It is a privacy product, not a blackout blind.

What colors are available?

Film Reverse is available in white only.

How is it controlled?

With a wall switch, a remote, a smartphone, or through Alexa and Google Home. Panels can be grouped and scheduled.

Can I install it myself?

We do not recommend it. Our certified installers measure and apply the film, and a certified electrician makes the power connection. Busbar positions and wiring have to be planned before manufacturing.

FAQ

Reverse Smart Glass Questions

What makes Reverse Glass different?

Reverse Glass uses PNLC technology, so it is clear when power is off and turns opaque when power is on. Standard PDLC glass works in the opposite way.

Is Reverse Glass a good choice for offices?

Yes. It is ideal for meeting rooms and interior partitions where glass normally stays clear and privacy is needed only at selected times.

Does it provide privacy during a power outage?

No. Reverse Glass becomes clear when power is off. For fail-private applications, standard PDLC glass is usually the better choice.

How quickly does it switch?

The glass turns private in under 200 milliseconds and returns to clear in under 10 milliseconds.

Is it energy efficient?

Yes. It runs on 25–80 VAC low voltage and consumes less than 0.5 watts per square foot while powered — and it needs no power at all to stay clear.

Can it be used in doors and partitions?

Yes. The laminated construction makes it suitable for interior doors, office partitions, conference rooms and other architectural glazing applications.

What colors are available?

Reverse Glass is available in white only. Grey and tinted options are offered on standard PDLC glass.

Where can I find installation information?

The technical manual above includes handling, electrical and installation guidance. A qualified glazing professional should complete installation.

FAQ

Smart Glass Questions

What is PriWatt™ Smart Glass made of?

It is laminated architectural glass with a PDLC liquid crystal film bonded inside the lamination. It is manufactured as a finished safety glass panel, in low iron, heat strengthened or tempered builds.

What happens when the power goes off?

Glass Original turns private when the power is off and still lets about 73% of daylight into the room. Glass Reverse does the opposite and stays clear when unpowered.

How fast does it switch?

Under 45 milliseconds from private to clear and under 10 milliseconds from clear to private, so the change looks instant.

Does privacy mode block the view completely?

In privacy mode haze reaches 95%, so people and shapes cannot be made out while natural light still comes through. It is a privacy product, not a blackout blind.

How large can a panel be?

Up to 70″ × 144″ at 9/16″ thickness and 70″ × 126″ at 1/2″. Larger areas are built from several panels, and curved shapes, holes and cut-outs are possible.

Can it be used outside and in doors?

Yes. For exterior use the panels are built into insulated glass units, and doors are glazed with the wiring routed through the frame or hinge. The wiring route has to be planned before manufacturing.

Who installs it?

A certified glazier installs the glass and a certified electrician makes the power connection. Our project managers handle measurements, manufacturing and coordination.

How long does it last and what is covered?

The glass is rated for 2 million switching cycles and a life cycle over 15 years, and it comes with a limited warranty. Working temperature range is -22°F to 122°F.
